Chevrolet Truck Towing Capacity Guide

Chevrolet Truck Towing Capacity Guide | Dave Kehl Chevrolet | Mechanicsburg, OH

When you’re shopping for a new truck, towing capacity is one of the most important things to look for. You don’t want to end up with a truck that can’t pull enough weight — but you also don’t want to buy way too much truck for your needs. Fortunately, Chevrolet pickups are designed to meet a wide range of towing needs. Here’s a closer look at how much each Chevy truck can pull, along with an overview of the top things you can tow with your new vehicle.

Chevrolet Colorado

Maximum towing capacity for the midsize 2022 Colorado depends on which of its three powertrains you choose.

  • Tow up to 3,500 pounds with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
  • Tow up to 7,000 pounds with the 3.6-liter V6 (Trailering Package required).
  • Tow up to 7,500 pounds with the Duramax® 2.8-liter Turbo-Diesel four-cylinder.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500

For 2022, the full-size Silverado 1500 offers four powertrains, each of which gives you plenty of towing capacity. Even the Silverado configuration with the lowest tow rating can pull up to 8,900 pounds.

  • The 2.7-liter turbo engine can pull up to 9,500 pounds (in Regular Cab/Long Bed 2WD configuration).
  • The 5.3-liter V8 can pull up to 11,200 pounds (Standard Bed 2WD with Max Trailering Package).
  • The Duramax 3.0-liter Turbo-Diesel can pull up to 13,300 pounds (Standard Bed 2WD with Max Trailering Package and 20-inch wheels).
  • The 6.2-liter V8 can also pull up to 13,300 pounds (Standard Bed 4x4 with Max Trailering Package and 20-inch wheels).

Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD

The heavy-duty 2022 Silverado 2500 HD boasts a pair of muscular powertrains for towing.

  • With the 6.6-liter V8, you can tow a max of 14,500 pounds with most bed/cab configurations. With a gooseneck/fifth-wheel towing setup, that max rating rises to 17,370 pounds.
  • With the 6.6-liter Duramax® Turbo-Diesel V8, you can tow a max of 18,500 pounds (Crew Cab/Standard Bed 2WD with 18-inch or 20-inch wheels) using conventional equipment, or a max of 18,510 pounds with gooseneck/fifth-wheel equipment.

Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD

Although it shares powertrains with the Silverado 2500 HD, the 2022 Silverado 3500 HD boasts even stronger towing capabilities thanks to an available dual rear wheel configuration.

  • You can tow up to 16,800 pounds with the 6.6-liter V8 (Long Bed 2WD DRW). A gooseneck/fifth-wheel setup gives you a towing max of 17,200 pounds (Long Bed 2WD).
  • You can tow up to 20,000 pounds with the 6.6-liter Duramax® Turbo-Diesel V8 in multiple configurations. And with gooseneck/fifth-wheel equipment, you can pull an enormous max of 36,000 pounds (Long Bed 2WD DRW).4

What can I tow with my Chevy truck’s capacity?

Before towing anything in your Chevy truck, be sure to carefully read the owner’s manual and the trailering information on the doorframe sticker to learn all the vehicle’s different weight ratings. You don’t want to max out your truck’s towing capacity and risk damaging it by hitching up more than it can handle. With these cautions in mind, here’s a look at what different weight ratings could allow your truck to pull.

3,500 pounds: With this max tow rating, you could hitch up a small trailer to carry items like canoes and kayaks, jet skis, motorcycles, or a fishing boat. You may also be able to pull a modestly sized pop-up camper, travel trailer, or utility trailer.

7,000 pounds: This towing capacity lets you hitch up larger utility trailers and campers, pull a car behind you, bring along a speedboat, or tow a trailer with one or two horses inside.

10,000 pounds: At this capacity, you could tow a large travel trailer or camper, a sailboat or pontoon boat, or a utility trailer loaded with heavy-duty tools.

15,000 pounds or more: With a heavy-duty truck, you could pull a big horse or livestock trailer, a flatbed trailer loaded with cars or construction equipment, a huge boat, or an especially large travel or recreational trailer.
