TOWING WITH YOUR TRUCK: LEARNING THE BASICS

Hitch types: Trailer hitches come in five classes and basically boil down to two categories: bumper-pull hitches and in-bed hitches. Fifth-wheels, installed in the bed, offer far better stability and strength, but gooseneck hitches are more common due to their non-invasive installation and cost. Fixed or adjustable ball mount hitches are sufficient for most light-duty pickup truck drivers’ casual towing needs, while pintle hitches are more common for heavy-duty trucks. Each type has its advantages like its weight capacity, versatility, cost, and convenience.

Tongue weight: Your hitch type, trailer weight, and trailer load weight determine how much force the trailer tongue can safely exert on the hitch when towing. The tongue load at the coupling point typically shouldn’t exceed 10-15% of the gross trailer weight. If exceeded, the trailer can sway and be hard to control.

Weight limit: When calculating your truck’s towing capacities, you need to know the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating (GCVWR) of the truck, the trailer, and all contents of both vehicles including passengers so you don’t exceed the advised capacities.

Towing add-ons: In addition to the basic hitch, you can add extra equipment like an equalizer, receiver cover, spring bar, towing mirror, or sway control device.

Dually: A dual rear-wheel truck. Having two rear wheels on either side (four in total on the rear axle) has significantly improves gooseneck/fifth-wheel towing capabilities. You can get a DRW setup on large Silverado models like the 3,500HD, 4550HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD.

UNDERSTANDING CHEVROLET BED AND CAB SIZES

Chevrolet manufactures its trucks with a variety of bed and cab sizes. Here is a guide to the different configurations.

Chevy truck cab sizes:

  • Regular cab: This two-door, single cab style offers one row of seats for two large passengers or a smaller third passenger in the middle.
  • Extended cab: The double cab configuration adds a second row of seats, but this bench is intended for small passengers who don’t need much legroom.
  • Crew cab: The four-door truck configuration provides enough seating for up to six passengers of varying size. However, front row space is reduced slightly to accommodate bigger rear seats, as is the bed length.

Chevy truck bed sizes:

  • Short: This bed is just enough for small hauling jobs like lumber, chairs, or bags of concrete. It typically measures 61-69 inches long. Choose it when you need maximum seating space in your truck and only periodic hauling.
  • Standard: This bed measures 74-79 long and gives a Chevy truck a balance between cab and bed room.
  • Long: Choose this elongated bed to maximize cargo storage space. You can haul a lot more in your Chevy truck with this bed that can measure as long as 98 inches on some models.
